The title of the novel points to a real historical event. The was a luxurious passenger steamship built in 1921 and owned by the Koninklijke Paketvaart Maatschappij (KPM). The ship met its tragic end on October 20, 1936 , when it mysteriously capsized in the Java Sea while sailing from Bali to Semarang. The ship, carrying passengers and cargo such as iron and teakwood, sank rapidly. While The New York Times reported 34 deaths, other sources suggest the actual toll was much higher, with estimates of over 75 casualties among hundreds on board. The exact location of the wreckage was only discovered in 2021, resting near the waters of Brondong, Lamongan, in East Java.
